Road Safety Grant Aims for Zero Roadway Deaths
The U.S. Department of Transportation’s Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration has announced the distribution of approximately $480 million in MCSAP grants. This significant funding, made possible by President Biden’s Bipartisan Infrastructure Law, is directed towards preventing crashes, fatalities, and injuries involving CMVs.
The MCSAP grants are the largest funding initiative from FMCSA, providing resources to all 50 states, the District of Columbia, American Samoa, Guam, the Northern Mariana Islands, Puerto Rico, and the U.S. Virgin Islands. This initiative aligns with the broader goals of the USDOT’s National Roadway Safety Strategy, which aims for zero roadway deaths.
The allocated funds will support several critical safety measures. These include comprehensive safety inspections of large trucks and buses, thorough investigations of motor carriers in response to safety concerns, and stringent audits of new truck carriers and bus companies. Additionally, the funding will bolster outreach and education efforts to combat human trafficking, distracted driving, and other prevalent roadway safety issues.
“Across the entire country, we are making our roadways safer and strengthening our national supply chains with resources made possible by the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law,” stated U.S. Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg. “The funding we’re announcing today will help our local safety partners invest in initiatives that will continue this important work and make our roadways safer” (U.S. Department of Transportation).
The impact of these grants is already evident. According to FMCSA Acting Deputy Administrator Sue Lawless, “The number of fatalities on our nation’s roadways involving commercial motor vehicles decreased by an estimated eight percent from 2022 to 2023. We know the needle is moving in the right direction, but until we reach zero roadway deaths, there will always be more work to do. These grants help fund that work” (U.S. Department of Transportation).
The National Roadway Safety Strategy, introduced in 2021, adopts a "safe system" approach. This strategy integrates safer roads, safer people, safer vehicles, safer speeds, and improved post-crash care to achieve the ultimate goal of zero deaths on our nation’s roadways. The MCSAP grants are instrumental in the implementation of this holistic safety strategy, ensuring that every state and territory has the necessary resources to contribute to this critical mission.
